Kansas City Star -- 'Windfall profits tax is no help'

If we need anything, it’s “windfall tax revenue” relief. Since 1977, according to a Tax Foundation study, governments at all levels have collected $1.34 trillion in gasoline taxes from motorists. Profits earned by the oil corporations during that time have amounted to less than half that sum. Where has the tax money collected by the governments gone? Who knows? It’s supposed to be used to build and repair the highway infrastructure, and no doubt some of it is.
