Bellville News-Democrat Interviews Senior Economist Gerald Prante on Property Taxes
"Metro-East Homeowners Pay More Taxes Than Most of Country"
By Will Buss
Metro-east homeowners paid more in property taxes over the past three years compared to most of the country.
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the median paid by homeowners in Monroe, Madison and St. Clair from 2005 through 2007 ranked 140th, 367th and 416th, respectively out of 1,817 counties across the country with 20,000 or more people.
The Tax Foundation spokesman Gerald Prante said metro-east property taxes were within the top 20 percent. "Property taxes in Madison and St. Clair counties are in the top tier in terms of property taxes," Prante said. "Property taxes are high in Illinois across the board."
