The race for three seats on the Passaic County board of Chosen Freeholders is headed for a razor-sharp finish, with the election to be decided only after mail-in ballots are counted later this week. ...

Taxes were the hot-button issue in the Freeholder race, where Republicans were looking to break through on the all-Democratic board. At the center of the campaign was a study by a non-partisan group, The Tax Foundation, that said property owners in Passaic County were buckling under one of the heaviest tax burdens in the country.

The study showed that county residents doled out nearly 9 cents of every dollar they earned to pay property taxes. That tax bite was the biggest of any county with a population of more than 65,000 in the U.S., the study said.
